In Manhattan, wannabe author Jabez Stone is a complete failure: he cannot sell his novels, he lives in a substandard flat, and he has no success with women. When one of his pals, Julius Jenson, sells his manuscript to an editor for US$190,000.00, Jabez becomes envious and vows to sell his soul to the devil in exchange for success, inadvertently killing a woman with his typing machine. The Devil knocks on his door, resolves the matter, and enters into a deal with Jabez. His low-quality writings receive negative reviews but become bestsellers; Jabez enriches himself; he enjoys success with ladies but has little time for his buddies. Jabez meets with publisher Daniel Webster, who offers him an opportunity to break the devil's contract.
