Squirm
We hear early on in the film from one of the individuals that electricity can be used to bring earthworms to the surface, but that doing so transforms them into nasty flesh-eaters. Indeed, a storm that night causes some power lines to collapse and come into contact with the ground, releasing millions of man-eating worms from the earth and into town, where they rapidly begin nibbling on the residents.
