The film is set in 1521 Antwerp, during the early years of the Reformation in a Europe plagued by religious warfare. It is the narrative of twelve-year-old Falko Voeten, the son of a printer. When Falko's father, Klaas Voeten, a printer of illegal literature, is apprehended by the Inquisition for publishing a letter written by Maarten Luther, Falko is unwittingly drawn into assisting his father and locating the letter. Faced with the Inquisition but supported by Marieke, a Catholic orphan girl from the basement sewers, Falko finds himself in a race against time to prevent his father from being punished for heresy.
