The plot revolves around a recently released white supremacist who has just slain a police officer and is holding a black family hostage. Garrett Tully is on the run just hours after being released from Pelican Bay State Prison, where he had been held in solitary confinement for 14 years. In his deluding belief that the Aryan Brotherhood is on his side–and that his kidnap victims are black–he seeks a house down a rural road and holds a family prisoner there. 'Mr. Walker is a jaded ex-con who despises officers so much that he disowns his own son for becoming one,' says the family's patriarch. Walker refuses to notify the authorities when he notices a familiar sign of desperation in Tully, causing family tensions to rise and, eventually, tragic mistakes to be committed.
