Brunel Global Securities' Victor Sandeman is a senior partner. He is suffering significant financial difficulties, which can be resolved if the company's planned $100 million merger occurs. However, the merger is opposed by the company's owner, Raymond Brunel. Victor, believing he can overcome the inept David Brunel, Raymond's grandson and the company's heir apparent, murders Raymond (faking a death by natural causes) in order to proceed with the proposed merger. Christine Sternwald, a prospective witness, is the only snag in the murder. Christine, a paralegal and aspiring lawyer, is still piecing together her life three years after a sexual attack. Victor is compelled to identify himself as Raymond Brunel when he meets Christine shortly after the murder in a fender mishap when Victor is driving the late Raymond's car.
