In this dramatic adaptation of Irvine Stone's novel, directed by Carol Reed, Charlton Heston portrays Renaissance artist Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (6 March 1475 – 18 February 1564), who reluctantly paints the Sistine Chapel for autocratic Pope Julius II against his opposition. While the novel follows Michelangelo's life from infancy to death, the film focuses on the clash of wills between the fastidious artist and the impatient Pope who commissions (and finally orders) him to paint the iconic chapel in the Vatican city.
