The Bad Kids
Among the dusty tumbleweeds and gnarled Joshua trees of the Mojave Desert, a high school stands out. There, educators believe that empathy, life skills, and the constancy of a caring adult are the things that will help at-risk students take charge of their own lives. During Vonda Viland's school day, she checks in with kids at the crack of dawn to see if they'll be able to make it to school. Suppose they need a ride. She will pick them up. When Vonda talks to her students, she doesn't make them believe they can do well. She never gives them false hope. Her philosophy is a mix of love and realism, and based on her school's rising graduation rate, it seems to work.
