The Ballad of Narayama
The film is shot in Kabuki style and portrays the narrative of a lonely mountain town where food scarcity forces relatives to bring 70-year-old family members up Narayama mountain to die. Granny Orin is approaching 70 years old and pleased with her lot. Tatsuhei, her bereaved son, is unable to face the loss of his mother, even as she arranges for his marriage to another widow his age. Kesa, her grandson, is selfishly glad to see Orin die. Around them, a family of thieves is dealt with harshly, and an elderly man, over 70 years old, who has been kicked out by his son, scrounges for food. Will Orin's welcoming and loving spirit be a source of wisdom and ennoblement for her family?
