Sam Dalmas, an American writer who lives in Rome, sees a fight between a young woman and a man in a black coat in an art gallery as he walks home one night. Dalmas tries to help, but he gets stuck between the electronic glass doors of the gallery. The woman is left bleeding from knife wounds. When questioned by the police, the shocked author tries to remember everything about what happened. Dalmas starts his own investigation because he is sure he forgot something about the crime. He and his girlfriend, Giulia, become possible targets for the killer.
