The Birth of a Nation

In director D.W. Griffith's controversial Civil War epic, two families, abolitionist Northerners the Stonemans and Southern landowners the Camerons, intertwine. Elsie Stoneman, a nurse, petitions for Confederate colonel Ben Cameron's pardon after he is captured in battle. Cameron founds the Ku Klux Klan in Reconstruction-era South Carolina, battling Elsie's congressman father and his African-American protégé, Silas Lynch.
