Henry Brougham, an Episcopal Bishop, has been working for months on plans for an elaborate new cathedral, which he hopes will be paid for primarily by a wealthy, obstinate widow. He has lost sight of his family and the reason he became a churchman in the first place. Dudley, an angel sent to assist him, enters the picture. Dudley does assist everyone he meets, but not always in the way they would prefer. Everyone loves him, except Henry, but as Christmas approaches, Henry begins to believe that Dudley is there to replace him, both at work and in his family's affections.
