After her husband departed to go sheep droving in the high country, Molly Johnson, who was eight months pregnant, and her children battle alone to survive the harsh Australian countryside in 1893. On her property, she one day discovers Yakada, an aboriginal fugitive who is bound and bleeding. As an odd friendship develops between them, he divulges information about her true identity. When Nate Clintoff, a new town lawman, learns that Molly's husband is genuinely missing, he begins to have suspicions and dispatches his constable to look into it.
