Madison finds herself trapped in a life of fear after almost drowning in a lake. She develops hydrophobia, an unnatural dread of water, due to her inability to express what occurred to her when she was underwater. Madison, who is paralyzed by her post-traumatic stress disorder, tries to block out the world, but her anxiety grows, and she is confronted with the vision of a dark figure who follows her about at all hours of the day and night. Madison's four friends try an innovative intervention after witnessing her struggle for a year with the phobia and visions, in which they mistakenly open a floodgate to a terrible place where none of them are safe. As Madison and her friends delve more into the terrible past of the figure that haunts them, it reaches out and drags them to a terrifying realm from which they will never be able to return.
