Ray Kroc, an Illinois salesman, met Mac and Dick McDonald, who ran a burger joint in 1950s Southern California. Kroc was fascinated by the brothers' fast meal preparation system and recognized possibilities for a franchise. He placed himself into a position where he could take the company from the brothers and turn it into a multibillion-dollar conglomerate.
