Sidney Lumet's film adaptation of Mary McCarthy's best-known book. At a private girl's school, eight young women are friends and part of the upper class. They are all about to graduate and start their own lives. The movie shows the years between their graduation and the start of the World War in Europe. It shows their romances and marriages, their search for jobs or meaning in their lives, their highs and lows, and so on in a serialized style.
