Eddie Willis, a jobless sportswriter, is hired by a shady fight promoter named Nick Benko to promote an unheralded Argentinian fighter by the name of Toro Moreno. Benko takes advantage of Willis' well-established reputation for honesty and status in the boxing community to set up a series of contrived contests that help drive the naive Moreno to the position of number one contender for the championship. Buddy Brannen, the defending champion and a cruel individual, feels slighted by the amount of attention that Toro has been getting and has vowed to brutally beat him in the ring. Eddie is now confronted with the decision of whether or not to educate Toro's naiveté by telling him the truth.
