Educator Christina (Claudia Karvan) is happy with her typical life as a school teacher from an affluent Greek-Australian family. She is engaged to a lawyer. Soon after she starts working as an elementary school teacher in an inner-city slum, she discovers that the pupils are challenging her beliefs. Christina falls in love with Nick, a 17-year-old aspiring soccer player, after she joins a group of non-white pupils in a push to launch a soccer club at a school where the prejudiced PE instructor only promotes Australian Rules Football (Alex Dimitriades). Christina is forced to confront herself, her family, and the culture she lives in as a result of the ensuing relationship. Coupling comedy with deep examinations of contemporary ethnic relationships in Australia with a youthful cast and insightful writing.
