The college students Jim Halsey and Grace Andrews give hitchhiker John Ryder a ride through the New Mexico Desert on a rainy night, when they are driving through the region. While in their car, the stranger reveals himself to be a psychopath who threatens the young couple with a knife, but Jim is able to toss him out on the road. The next morning, the young couple observes John in another vehicle.
