Algernon Moncrieff is taken aback when he learns that his millionaire pal "Ernest" is actually named Jack Worthing. Jack created his alter identity in order to flee his rural home, where he is responsible for Cecily Cardew, his charge. Cecily thinks Ernest is Jack's rogue brother, and she admires his hedonistic lifestyle. Seeing an opportunity, Algernon takes on Ernest's persona and goes away to woo Cecily.
