After being thrown out of another town for reportedly destroying a farm for vengeance, Ben Quick arrives at Frenchman's Bend, MS. Will Varner owns nearly everything in Frenchman's Bend and employs Ben in his business. Will believes his own son, Jody, the store's manager, is lacking in ambition and fears that he will fail to conceive his wife, Eula. Clara, a schoolteacher, is Will's daughter who he believes will never marry. He decides that Ben Quick would be a good husband for Clara, as he would introduce new blood into the family.
