The Man Who Laughs

As a kind of retribution for the betrayal committed by Gwynplaine's father, Lord Clancharlie, the King had a permanent smile carved into the face of Gwynplaine's son, Gwynplaine. Gwynplaine is brought up as a member of the traveling showman's family and eventually becomes famous. He finds himself falling in love with Dea, who is blind. After the death of the king, the wicked jester plots to destroy or corrupt Gwynplaine in some way.
