Leon, a photographer, lives with his fiancée, Maya, a waitress, in the hopes of breaking into the industry. When Maya contacts their mutual friend Jurgis, he arranges for Leon to meet with Susan Hoff, the successful owner of an artists gallery, who evaluates Leon's work and advises him on how to enhance the quality of his photographs. During the night, an enraged Leon chooses to wander the streets with his camera, following three punks down to the subway station; when the group threatens a young woman, Leon protects her and the guys move on. Leon realizes the woman has gone missing the next morning. He goes to the police station, but Detective Lynn Hadley ignores him and dismisses his claim. Leon becomes concerned with discovering what happened to the stranger, and he keeps a close eye on the metro station. In the beginning of his trip into the darkness, Leon suspects the exquisite butcher Mahogany of being a killer and follows him everywhere.
