When Sophie, six, is cruelly orphaned, custody is handed to her estranged aunt Annabelle. Sophie discovers a closed wooden box with a mysterious symbol etched on it when the two move into a vast, creepy Victorian home. Annabelle, desperate to contact her niece, prys the lock open, revealing a lovely music box. The music box's strangely haunting song plays somewhat longer each time it is coiled and replayed, enthralling Sophie even more. When the music box begins to impair Sophie's behavior and health, Annabelle seeks the help of a child psychologist and clairvoyant, who soon discovers the music box is inhabited by an evil spirit intent on haunting Sophie and destroying Annabelle. As the haunting becomes more intense, time begins to run out, and Annabelle finds herself racing against the music box's melody to destroy the spirit before the final note is played.
