During a surprise birthday celebration, Ed and his father were cleaning his father's hunting weapons when one of them accidentally went off, killing Ed's mother. When his father saw the bloodshed, he went into a rage and Ed narrowly escaped with his life. His father is still waiting to settle the score when the boy, now in his teens, arrives home; he doesn't expect to find him there.
