Felix Ungar and his wife just broke up. He is so sad that he plans to kill himself, but his friend Oscar Madison stops him. Oscar tells Felix that he should move in with him, if only for a while, since he has nowhere else to go. The only problem is that Felix is neat, tidy, and neurotic, while Oscar is sloppy and carefree.
