Tom Thompson, an aspiring architect, is informed by Ruth Abernathy that his best buddy, "Bill," has committed himself. Except that neither Tom nor his astonished buddies have ever met Bill. As a result, when Tom decides to deliver the eulogy at Bill's funeral, he finds himself in conflict with Ruth — who is revealed to be Bill's oversexed mother — and Julie DeMarco, a longstanding crush Tom hasn't seen since they were teenagers.
