After a long journey from Scotland, musician Ada McGrath and her little daughter Flora are abandoned on a New Zealand beach with all of their belongings, including a piano. Ada, who has been mute since childhood, has been sold into marriage to Alisdair Stewart, a local. Ada, who makes no effort to warm up to Alisdair, becomes captivated by his Maori-friendly acquaintance, George Baines, which leads to tense, life-altering disputes.
