Tara Maguire (Robin Wright), a young lady in her small Irish hamlet in the 1950s, embarrasses her community by conceiving a kid out of wedlock and refuses to identify the father of the child. She possesses a rare beauty, and every guy in town, particularly Sergeant Hegarty, is smitten with her (Albert Finney). Everything gets even more interesting when a dramatic company arrives, especially when she falls in love with one of the "Playboys," Tom Casey (Aidan Quinn).
