In1526, Charles V sends Georg von Frundsberg and his German landsknechts to Rome. In the midst of a severe winter, Giovanni de'Medici's inferior papal soldiers attempt to pursue them. But thanks to the tactics of its Lords, the Imperial troops are able to bridge the rivers on their path and acquire artillery. Giovanni de'Medici suffers a leg wound from a falconnet shot during a battle. He is not successfully treated, and he passes away. Rome is attacked by the imperial army. The film depicts the difficult circumstances in which war is fought and its lack of glory in a beautiful yet unpretentious setting. The simple declaration that European army commanders would refrain from using firearms in the future due to their brutality was made after Giovanni de'Medici died.
