Caroline and Lloyd are a married couple who are constantly at odds, masters of crafting acid-tongued barbs at the expense of the other. Indeed, they are so obsessed with belittling one another that they never stop, even when threatened with a gun. Gus, a thief on the run from the cops, kidnaps the couple as an insurance policy and plans to use their home as a hideout. But their constant bickering proves to be more than Gus bargained for, forcing him to take on the unenviable role of peacemaker for the sake of his own sanity. To make matters worse for Gus, he discovers that he has taken the couple hostage on the night of their big Christmas party, and the guests are already on their way. Gus attends the party as the couple's marriage counselor, not wanting to leave Lloyd and Caroline alone. This naturally leads to a series of comic conundrums as the hostage crisis and marital tensions reach their inevitable conclusion.
