The Reluctant Astronaut

Don Knotts plays Roy Fleming, a small-town carnival ride operator who is terrified of heights. Roy grudgingly travels to Houston after finding that his father has signed him up for the space program, only to discover that his job is a janitor, not an astronaut. Roy manages to maintain a facade of being an astronaut to his family and friends, despite his anxiety about living up to his dominating father's expectations. When NASA chooses to send a layperson into orbit to test the viability of a new autonomous spaceship, Roy is forced to confront his concerns.
