Diz (Joel Courtney) is a brash adolescent nomad who lives on the run. As a child, he was abandoned by his parents; he now fends for himself and refuses to accept help. He seizes whatever he desires and flees. Diz lives a life of thieving and desertion, jaded and determined to answer to no one. When Diz floats into a small town along the Snake River, everything changes for him. There he meets an unflappable elderly gentleman named Marty and falls in love with Marty's guarded granddaughter, Selah. When Diz robs a local drug dealer, he ends up with a large sum of money and becomes the target of two violent killers. With more money than he knows what to do with and criminals on his tail, Diz risks putting the people he's grown to care about in order to win Selah. However, certain items cannot be taken or purchased. The River Thief is a film about self-sacrifice, remorse, and the acceptance of life as a gift.
