What is the difference between reality and fiction? When Lewis Fielding's novel suffers from writer's block, he turns to a film script about a woman discovering herself after his wife Elizabeth returns from Baden Baden. She didn't quite find herself there, but she did meet a German poet in a lift. Now that the German has arrived in England, he is invited to tea and claims to admire Fielding's books. Which does he prefer? "Jones." The novelist, amused by being confused with the other Fielding, incorporates the German into the plot.
