The Shootout is an action comedy from the early 1990s that features a large number of actors that have had starring roles in movies made in Hong Kong both in the past and in the present. Pop star Aaron Kwok plays the role of Fai, a relatively young and inexperienced cop who makes an unintentional arrest of a member of a theft gang. However, Fai is stripped of his rank when the ruthless commander of the gang, Elvis Tsui, infiltrates Police HQ in an attempt to eliminate his own friend! Fortunately, the authorities enlist the assistance of two "professional" law enforcement officers, Lau (played by Sean Lau Ching Wan) and Ma (played by Leung Ka Yan), in their pursuit of the criminals. Min (Fennie Yuen), a club singer who Fai is attracted to and who is also the girlfriend of the primary villain, is assisting the police in their investigation. The police are able to reassemble in time for a bloody conclusion thanks to the excellent work of their officers and, who knows, maybe even a little luck. The Shootout is highlighted by gritty brutality and thrilling, over-the-top action, but the elements that keep things enjoyable are the charismatic stars and the quick-footed humour.
