Dima Ilukhin, the director's cousin and a Russian army officer, died on duty in the Republic of Dagestan in the North Caucasus in 2013. He was 21 years old at the time. This incident serves as the catalyst for Abaturov's reflection on the military. He records new recruits in Siberia as they bid their moms and boyfriends farewell, study the mechanics of a Kalashnikov, or hurl a hand grenade and perform first aid. Dima's former recruits must return to combat while his parents try to cope with their loss.
