In modern-day Manhattan, Balthazar Blake is a master sorcerer who is trying to protect the city from his worst enemy, Maxim Horvath. Balthazar can't do it on his own, so he chooses Dave Stutler, an average-looking guy with hidden talent, to be his reluctant protégé. The sorcerer gives his unwilling partner a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together they work to stop the forces of darkness.
