The Story of Qiu Ju

The Story of Qiu Ju is a Chinese comedy-drama film released in 1992. The film was directed by Zhang Yimou, and Gong Li plays the titular role, as has been the case in many of his previous films. The Wan Family's Lawsuit is an adaptation of the novella The Wan Family's Lawsuit by Chen Yuanbin. The tale of Qiu Ju, a peasant woman who lives in a rural location of China, is told via the lens of the film. Despite the fact that she is pregnant, Qiu Ju travels to a small town and then to a major metropolis in order to deal with bureaucrats and seek restitution for her husband's groin injury, which was caused by the village head.
