Conservatives attack Harrison MacWhite's Senate nomination hearing to become ambassador to Sarkan, a country in Southeast Asia where civil war threatens to disrupt the delicate peace. Despite his expertise, MacWhite perceives only a contrast between America and Communism. He can't understand anti-American feeling as a desire for independence and nationalism. So he abandons his opposition leader pal Deong, defies a foreman's request to pause road construction, and pushes ahead. But at what cost to the nation and his friends?
