The scene is set on the east coast of the Caspian Sea (today's Turkmenistan), where Red Army soldier Fyodor Sukhov has been fighting the Russian Asian Civil War for several years. He returns home to join his wife after being hospitalized and subsequently demobbed, only to be caught up in a desert battle between a Red Army cavalry force and Basmachi guerrillas. Rahimov, the commander of the cavalry troop, "convinces" Sukhov to temporarily assist with the security of abandoned ladies from the harem of Basmachi rebel leader Abdullah. Rahimov and his cavalry regiment went out to chase Abdullah, leaving a young Red Army man, Petrukha, to aid Sukhov. Sukhov and the women of Abdullah's harem return to a nearby coastal village. Abdullah and his group soon arrive in the same village, looking for a route across the border...
