She is sold into marriage by her father in 1880s China because he is unable to support her financially. Lalu ends up in an Idaho gold-mining town, where she becomes the property of a saloon owner who renames her China Polly and wants to sell her as entertainment for the townsfolk instead of becoming a wife. Lalu, who has refused to become a whore, eventually finds her own way in this weird nation filled with white demons.
