After hired hand Tom Chaney kills her father, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to catch the killer. To help her, she hires the toughest U.S. Marshal she can find, a man with "true grit" named Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Mattie insists on going with Cogburn, who is a drunk, lazy, and generally bad person, so she doesn't have much faith in him. In spite of his wishes, she goes with him on his journey into the Indian Nations to look for Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own reasons. On their journey, the three strangers face danger and adventure, and each of them has his or her "grit" tested.
