When elderly pensioner Umberto Domenico Ferrari returns to his boarding house after participating in a demonstration calling for an increase in old-age pensions, his landlady demands that she pay her 15,000-lire rent by the end of the month, or he and his small dog will be forced to live on the streets. Because he is unable to obtain the funds in time, Umberto fabricates a sickness in order to be admitted to a hospital, entrusting his pet dog to the care of the landlady's pregnant and abandoned maid as a temporary measure.
