When Charles Adare moves to Australia in 1831, his cousin, who is now governor, helps him start a new life. When he gets there, he meets powerful landowner and ex-convict Sam Flusky, who wants to make a business deal with him when he gets back. Charles meets Flusky's wife, Henrietta, at a dinner party at his house. Henrietta was a friend of Charles's when he was a child back in Ireland. A lot of people think Henrietta is going to go crazy because she drinks alcohol.
