Isabella, the daughter of the noble York family, has been enrolled in an all-girls academy in order to be groomed into a dame befitting of nobility, a position she holds with distinction. She, on the other hand, has given up on her future, considering the elite institution to be nothing more than a fortress that keeps her isolated from the outside world. Violet Evergarden is hired by her family to privately educate her in her lessons under the pretense of a handmaiden after her parents observe that she is suffering in her lessons. Violet is initially treated with disdain by Isabella.
