When a Woman Ascends the Stairs

Keiko, whom everyone refers to as Mama, tells her life story: she's a hostess on the Ginza, thirty years old, and a widow. "I'm becoming older," she says as she recalls the terrible circle of her life: being upbeat around drunks, clothing and living well in order to project confidence, needing money for these expenses and for her demanding mother and brother, and realizing she is growing older. The time has come for her to make a decision between three options: seeking marriage (which will be difficult considering her soiled profession), being a kept lady, or borrowing money to open her own bar. Investors who want a return on their loans are a risk associated with each approach. Her peaceful dignity draws the attention of men, but are they really who they claim to be. Whether or not she has options is unclear.
