Novalee Nation is a seventeen-year-old Tennessee vagrant who is forced to mature quickly after her lover abandons her on a roadside in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, and seeks safety in the welcoming aisles of Wal-Mart. Within a short time, a group of eccentric, benevolent individuals "adopt" Novalee and her young daughter, assisting them in defying the odds and establishing a new life.
