During World War II, the western Netherlands is in the grip of a famine in the freezing winter of 1944/1945. Many people relocate to the east to support their families. Michiel, a fourteen-year-old boy, can't wait to join the Dutch resistance, much to the chagrin of his father, who works as mayor to keep the village calm.
