A History of Britain

Simon Schama's Complete History of Britain, which spans from the Stone Age to the year2000, does not purport to offer a final account of the stormy events that buffeted and formed the British Isles. Schama, on the other hand, tells the story in vivid and compelling narrative terms, free of the stuffiness of typical academe, personalizing crucial historical events by scrutinizing the essential figures at their center. Schama's portrayal of history as molded primarily by the actions of great men and people as opposed to more abstract processes may not be accepted by all historians, but as a result it is considerably more captivating. Schama successfully disproves the notion that British history has been moderate and temperate, traveling from generation to generation with the dignity of a galleon, taking on board decent ideas but avoiding foolish, revolutionary ones. Nonsense. Schama retells British history as it was: brutal, convulsive, precarious, hot-blooded, and numerous times on the verge of veering off in a completely other direction. Schama appears to practically take pleasure in the gruesomeness of history. Wars between the Scots and the Irish and Catholic/Protestant disputes are recurring themes; only the Irish matter remains unresolved in the new millennium. As the United Kingdom transitions to a constitutional monarchy, Schama speaks less about Kings and Queens and more about poets and thinkers such as Orwell. Nevertheless, Schama makes history feel as if it occurred yesterday, with the bloodstains still wet, by employing a forceful, direct style with an evocative visual and aural background.
