Titans came very close to wiping out all human life some hundred years ago. Titans generally stand many stories tall, give off the impression that they have no intelligence, consume human beings, and, what's worse, it appears that they do this more for the fun of it than because it provides them with sustenance. A tiny fraction of humanity managed to live by hunkering down inside a metropolis that was surrounded by walls that were even higher than the Titans themselves. A quick jump forward in time reveals that the city has not been visited by a Titan in over a century. Eren, a teenage lad, and Mikasa, his foster sister, are present as a Colossal Titan materializes out of thin air and causes the city walls to crumble. They both see something horrifying. The two children look on in horror as their mother is devoured by one of the smaller Titans while the city is overrun by the other Titans. Eren swears that he will kill each and every Titan and exact revenge on their behalf and all of humanity.
