Jonathan Ames, a young writer from Brooklyn, is feeling lost. He just went through a painful breakup, which he blames in part on his drinking. He also can't write his second novel and hangs out too much with his magazine editor. Instead of facing reality, Jonathan turns to his fantasies, like moonlighting as a private detective, because he wants to be a hero and a man of action.
